Fifi the French Silkie

Ooh La Oui, Fifi

Fifi, simply would not be seen outside the hen house in anything but her finest attire. She fluffed her feathers carefully and preened like a peacock, if she had known what a peacock was, which she didn’t. She only knew that she came in the mail, from a “far away coop”  and was a Silky. She sported a fine yellow pom-Pom on top of her head, and long fine plumage that went all the way down her legs. She appeared to float as she strutted through the yard.

Hannah cuddles Fifi, one of our Silkies. They don't see very well, so they are easier to catch!

The other hens came from the feed store and were very plain in comparison. Fifi tried not to let her good looks make her vain or proud. But she knew that she was the favorite. Every day, The Woman would scoop her up and sit down on the garden swing with her. She would coo "Bonjour Madame Fifi," as she stroked her feathers.

One morning, Fifi was especially excited for The Woman to visit, because she had laid her very first egg. She was extremely pleased with herself! When the time came, she ran into the nesting box and sat gently upon it.

"Are you hiding from me?" said The Woman she opened the door to the nesting box and peeked inside.  "Well, there you are!" she said as she scooped her up and then as she saw Fifi's surprise, "What's this? Your first egg!" she laughed, "well, that is the tiniest chicken egg I've ever seen." Then she laughed again.

Fifi was miffed and tried to wriggle out of her hands and get back on her precious egg. The Woman chuckled and had half a mind to let Fifi sit there, but she knew better. She reached under and took the egg from her and put her outside in the coop with the rest of the birds. Then she gathered the rest of the eggs closed the door to the nesting box so Fifi wouldn't go back in. Silkies will get broody far too easily, and she couldn't hatch these infertile eggs anyway.

"Thank you for the lovely egg," she said to Fifi "it's just perfect." Fifi felt better after this, and decided to go find her friend Daisy and tell her about her egg.
