Fancy That!

 Fancy That!

Gertie, Fancy and Opal, explore the yard.

It was a fine day. The sun was out and the sky was blue, even if the wind was chilly. The flock were all outside enjoying the day.

Fancy, after ingesting a modest amount of corn and feed, headed to the one patch of dirt that was dry enough and began scratching around and digging it up. She found a few little bugs in the dirt and ate them and kept digging until she had what she considered was sufficient for a nice dust bath. She was as plain as the day is long, but would never own it. She fluffed her feathers and flapped in the dirt, as she saw Fifi strut by with Opal and Gertie.

“This is the best day for my hat,” Fifi said cheerfully. “Too bad there is no rooster around to admire it.”

“Roosters are so beautiful,” said Opal, though she had never really seen one.
"Oh yes," said Fancy, as she finished up her dust bath. "Roosters have the prettiest feathers!"

Gertie was nearby scratching the dirt for bugs, and thought Opal and Fancy quite silly to be talking about roosters, who were nothing but trouble. She grumbled slowly, then let out a loud squawk.

"You've never lived with a rooster. You don't want one," she squawked. She had come from another coop in the country and wasn't impressed one bit with roosters.

“This wind is too chilly and doesn’t please me at all,” she said and found a sunny spot on the other side of the hen house where the wind couldn’t ruffle her feathers so much. Nothing much pleased Gertie.

Fancy was watching Daisy out by the hedge and decided to go over there and find out what she was doing. Just as she got closer, Daisy turned around and walked back.

"Who were you talking to?" Fancy asked her.
"Oh, just a rooster, hiding in the hedge," Daisy answered as she pecked around.

Fancy cackled. She thought Daisy was telling her a tale, but she went over anyway to investigate. She was pretty surprised when a rooster crowed from the hedge!
